Hyderabad: Dr D. Nageshwar Reddy, founder and chairman of AIG Hospitals, on Saturday became the first medical doctor to be bestowed with all three Padma awards — Padma Shri in 2002, Padma Bhushan in 2016, and the Padma Vibhushan on Saturday.His unparalleled contributions to public health, especially in gastroenterology, have earned him this rare distinction.Dedicating the honour to his patients and his team at AIG Hospitals, Dr Nageshar Reddy said: This is not just a personal milestone, but a celebration of the spirit of Indian medicine and the immense potential our great nation holds in healthcare innovation.”Compassionate patient care has always been the cornerstone of my journey, and I dedicate this honour to every individual who places their trust in us during their most vulnerable moments. Together, we can create a healthier, stronger, and more united India,” Dr Reddy said.After completing his Doctorate of Medicine (gastroenterology) from PGIMER, Chandigarh, he chose to specialise in gastrointestinal endoscopy —a field that was then in its nascent stages in India. Over the years, his contributions have revolutionised the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal disorders.He then founded the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology and AIG Hospitals in Hyderabad, which have grown to provide world-class facilities for gastroenterology, GI endoscopy and hepatology. AIG Hospitals is a go-to centre for complex disorders and diseases spanning across 40+ medical specialties.As a prolific researcher and academician, Dr Reddy has authored over 1,000 peer-reviewed articles and delivered keynote lectures at some of the most prestigious medical conferences around the world. He is a recipient of numerous international awards, including the Master of the World Gastroenterology Organisation Award and the Rudolf V. Schindler Award, the highest honour in the field of gastrointestinal endoscopy.Under his guidance, AIG Hospitals has conducted numerous free medical camps, research initiatives, and community outreach programs, benefiting thousands of underprivileged patients. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Dr Reddy and his team were at the forefront of India’s fight against the virus, leveraging their expertise to develop protocols for the management of gastrointestinal symptoms in Covid-19 patients.
