SRINAGAR: Deepak Kumar alias Deepu, who was shot dead by militants in South Kashmir on Monday, was the lone breadwinner of his family. His elder brother Raju is visually impaired and his father Mashu Ram has not been keeping well.
Deepak, who was working in a circus near the Janglaat Mandi area in Anantnag district in south Kashmir, was expecting his first child in June. In a mindless act of targeted killing, the 27-year-old was shot by militants on Monday evening when he was out to buy milk from the market.
“Being visually impaired, I don’t do any work. He was the lone bread earner of the family feeding us all me, my wife, my two kids, our elderly parents and his wife,” Raju said. The poor family lives in a mud house in Udhampur village and Deepak was regularly sending money to the family every month to fulfill their expenses. “He was taking care of us all. He was bearing our medical expenses and operating cost of household chores,” Raju said. Raju had talked to Deepak on the phone the previous evening and he had told his brother that he would send money for the family on the first of next month.
“What was his fault? Why did they (militants) kill him? We were solely dependent on him for survival. They have snatched our sole bread earner. Now what will happen to us and how will we survive,” he said.
A large number of people in his native Thial village of Udhampur attended his last journey. “The family is very poor. Deepak was somehow managing the survival of his family but now that he has been killed by militants, the government should give the family compensation,” the villagers said. The security agencies, meanwhile, have launched a massive manhunt to track down the killers of Deepak.
