Discussion on Marxism and Feminism held in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Shivani Kaul, political activist and president of the Delhi State Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Union, said women’s liberation could not be achieved within capitalism. She argued that while feminist ideologies seek solutions within the capitalist framework, true emancipation for women was only possible by dismantling capitalism itself. She was speaking at a discussion on “Marxism and Feminism” held here on Thursday. The event, organised by In Defence of Reason, a city-based forum, examined the historical roots of patriarchy and critiqued existing feminist frameworks for failing to address its systemic origins.Kaul highlighted that patriarchy emerged alongside class society and remains intrinsically tied to the capitalist system of exploitation. The discussion also delved into the limitations of approaches like Proletarian Feminism, which attempts to bridge Marxism and Feminism. Participants emphasised the challenges of combating patriarchy within the current system and underscored the need to integrate the struggle against women’s oppression with the broader fight against capitalism.
