Curfew in Manipur area after arson attack on BJP leader’s house over support to Waqf Act

The order banned the assembly of five or more persons, carrying of firearms, swords, sticks, stones, or other lethal weapons, sharp-edged articles, and objects of any description which can be used as offensive weapons.A member of Ali’s family told a news channel the perpetrators had also burnt the Quran.“We had just returned home from a wedding when a mob began pelting stones at our house. We apologised, but they attacked the house. Even the Quran was burnt. Money, gold ornaments, etc., were stolen. Their motive was to steal valuables,” the family member said.Meanwhile, the Manipur Congress opposed the Waqf (Amendment) Act, calling it unconstitutional.“It also undermines Article 25 of the Constitution – the Right to Freedom of Religion enshrined as a fundamental right in the Constitution. It is nothing but an attempt through an unconstitutional legislation to bring personal laws under state control,” Manipur Congress chief Keisham Meghachandra Singh said.
