Vijayawada: Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand has urged every citizen to contribute towards converting waste into wealth by ensuring proper recycling and segregation of wet and dry waste at home. He emphasised the importance of maintaining cleanliness while participating in the Swachh Andhra-Swachh Divas programme, held under the theme ‘Source to Resource’ on Saturday.The CS interacted with residents to raise awareness about waste segregation at the household level during the programme, which was organised under the aegis of the Vijayawada Municipal Commissioner at Rajiv Nagar near the Ayurvedic Hospital. He visited an awareness stall set up by the VMC, which demonstrated the process of waste segregation at home. He observed how the three-coloured waste bins should be used—‘Green’ for wet waste, ‘Blue’ for dry waste, and ‘Red’ for hazardous waste, including masks, diapers, sanitary napkins, blood-stained clothes, syringes, needles, and broken glass bottles. He also noted how organic waste could be composted at home. The CS inspected stalls showcasing fogging, spraying, drone spraying, and anti-larval operations conducted by the VMC. He also visited a special stall highlighting the ban on single-use plastic. Flagging off a walkathon rally at Rajiv Nagar, the CS continued up to Prakash Nagar, interacting with residents along the way. He explained the importance of using three-coloured waste bins and lauded homemakers for properly segregating waste at the source. VMC commissioner Dhyanachandra stated that the municipal corporation was distributing three types of bins to residents and enforcing stringent measures to prohibit plastic items below 102 microns and ban single-use plastic materials.
