Mumbai: Churchgate, Mumbai’s busiest suburban railway terminus, has unveiled a striking tribute to some of India’s most celebrated sports personalities. Prominently displayed within the station’s historic structure, the installation honors a distinguished group of athletes and coaches whose contributions have left an indelible mark on Indian sports.Among those featured are cricket stalwarts Nari Contractor and Diana Edulji, both recipients of the Padma Shri award, and renowned coach Dinesh Lad, a Dronacharya Awardee credited with mentoring several of India’s top cricketers.Celebrating Cricketing ExcellenceNari Contractor, former Indian Test captain and Padma Shri awardee (1962), is revered for his resilience and leadership during a formative era for Indian cricket. Alongside him, Diana Edulji, awarded the Padma Shri in 2002, is recognized not only for her stellar performances on the field but also for her pioneering role in promoting women’s cricket in India.Their legacies are now part of the daily commute for thousands of Mumbaikars, serving as a reminder of the perseverance and passion that define India’s sporting icons.Coach Dinesh Lad’s Inspiring JourneyAlso featured is Dinesh Lad, whose influence on Indian cricket runs deep. A Dronacharya Award winner in 2022, Lad is best known for shaping the careers of international stars such as Rohit Sharma and Shardul Thakur. His journey—from joining Indian Railways in 1982 as a Class IV employee to becoming one of the country’s most respected cricket coaches—has inspired countless aspiring athletes.Reflecting on the honor, Lad said, “I joined Railways in 1982 as a class four employee and retired after 39 years. I am proud to be a Dronacharya Awardee and to be on a list at Churchgate station.
