NEW DELHI: China has issued 60,000 visas to Indians since the beginning of 2023. “In the first five months of this year, the Chinese Embassy and Consulates General have issued over 60,000 visas to Indian travelling to China for business, education, tourism, family reunion and work,” said Wang Xianjian, the Chinese spokesperson in India.
Earlier in March, the Chinese Embassy had issued a notification stating that Chinese visas issued before March 28th, 2020 (pre-Covid times) and the remaining valid period would be reactivated. “The Chinese Embassy and Consulates General in India will resume issuing various types of Chinese visas. Port visa authorities will also resume giving port visas, and visa exemption policies in some areas will be reactivated,” the Chinese Embassy had said. China had been closed to visitors for three years since the onset of the pandemic. The worst impacted were Indian students who returned when the pandemic began but weren’t issued visas for the longest time.
Indian students, mostly studying medicine across various universities in China, had to keep making pleas to be granted visas as their studies were getting impacted. Indian students were among the last to be considered by China for the granting of visas. A lot of requests by the Indian government and Indian students finally led to students rejoining their universities to complete their degrees.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi on April 6 said that India hopes that the Chinese authorities would facilitate Indian journalists’ continued presence and reporting from China after reports came up where visas of two Indian journalists in China were frozen. Speaking to media persons, Bagchi said, “We have Chinese journalists who have valid Indian visas for pursuing journalistic activities (in India). I don’t see any limitations or difficulties in reporting and doing media coverage.
