Chhattisgarh HC Grants Divorce to Woman Citing Husband’s Excessive Drinking, Illicit Relationship with other Women

Raipur: The Chhattisgarh high court on Wednesday granted divorce to a woman ending her 34-year-long marriage on the ground of her husband’s excessive drinking habit and illicit relationship with other women.A division bench comprising Justice Rajani Dubey and Justice Narendra Kumar Vyas, while granting divorce to the woman, observed that ‘The man indulged in excessive drinking and had illicit relationships with other women. He is not doing any work to support his family. Such irresponsible and promiscuous conduct of the respondent (the husband) is causing social infamy to the whole family. The high court overturned the family court’s verdict by granting divorce to the woman. The family court did not take these factors into consideration while holding that no mental or physical cruelty had been committed by the husband against the woman, the division bench said. The couple had married in 1991 and have three children, two daughters and one son.The woman, a government teacher, filed divorce against her husband saying that she had been living separately in another room of their house since 2018 and they had no conjugal relations since then. The court held that the husband was doing nothing to support the family and the woman had taken responsibility for the family and financed the construction of their house, besides holding the wedding of their first daughter. The husband has neither sought employment to support the family nor is loyal to the marriage, the high court said while granting divorce to the woman.
