Centre says 487 'presumed Indians' face deportation threat in US, concerns raised regarding ill-treatment of deportees

NEW DELHI: India has raised concerns with the United States over the mistreatment of deported Indian nationals, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said on Friday. The issue gained attention after 104 Indians were deported on a US military aircraft that landed in Amritsar on Wednesday. Reports of the deportees being handcuffed and mistreated during the journey sparked widespread outrage.Meanwhile, the United States has notified India about 487 individuals, believed to be Indian nationals, who have received removal orders. Of these, the nationality verification process is underway for 295 individuals, Misri said. Once this process is over they will be sent back.”We’ve been told there are 487 presumed Indian citizens with final removal orders,” Misri said, adding that details of 298 individuals have been shared with Indian authorities.Addressing a special briefing, Misri said that India had officially registered its concerns with US authorities regarding the treatment of deportees. He emphasized that India strongly opposes any mistreatment and will continue to take up such cases whenever they come to its attention. He meanwhile stressed the need to address the ‘larger issue of illegal immigration’ and the system that supports it.
