JAMMU: At least 37 people were killed and 19 injured when a bus carrying passengers skidded off the road and rolled down into a 300-foot gorge in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district on Wednesday, officials said.

The bus bearing registration number JK02CN-6555 was reportedly carrying 56 passengers, they said, adding that it skidded off the road near Trungal-Assar on the Batote-Kishtwar national highway and fell 300 feet downhill.

The bus was on its way from Kishtwar to Jammu, a report said.

Some of the injured are said to be critical.

Condolences

President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minster Narendra Modi and political leaders on Wednesday expressed shock and sadness over the bus accident in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda.

“I am deeply saddened by the news of the unfortunate death of several passengers in a bus accident in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir.

I express my condolences to the bereaved family members and pray for the speedy recovery of those injured,” Murmu said in a post in Hindi on X, formerly Twitter.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the bus accident was distressing.

“My condolences to the families who have lost their near and dear ones.

I pray that the injured recover at the earliest,” Modi said on X.

He announced that an ex gratia amount of Rs 2 lakh each would be given to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each to the injured from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF).

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge expressed pain and anguish over the loss of lives in the bus accident and urged authorities to speed up the relief and rescue work.

“Pained and anguished to hear about the terrible bus tragedy in Doda, Jammu and Kashmir which has resulted in loss of many precious lives.

We urge the authorities to expedite the rescue and relief work,” he said in a post on X.

“In this hour of grief, our deepest condolences to the families of the victims.

May they get the strength to overcome their losses,” he said.

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and three former chief ministers of the erstwhile state expressed condolences over the loss of lives.

“Extremely pained by the loss of lives in a tragic bus accident in Assar, Doda.

My heartfelt condolences to bereaved families & wishing for a speedy recovery of those injured in the accident.

Directed Div Com & Dist Admin to provide all necessary assistance to affected persons,” Sinha posted on X.

PDP president Mehbooba Mufti also expressed grief over the loss of lives.

“Deeply shocked & saddened about the tragic road accident at Assar in Doda.

Deepest condolences to the families of those feared dead & hope the administration expedites rescue operations,” she posted on X.

National Conference president Farooq Abdullah and vice president Omar Abdullah also expressed sadness over the loss of lives.

“JKNC President Dr Farooq Abdullah and VP @OmarAbdullah are extremely shocked and saddened to hear about the road accident at Assar near Trungal in Doda district in which several are feared dead.

They have implored the administration to provide all possible help to the injured.

In this moment of immense grief, their thoughts and prayers lie with the families of the deceased,” the National Conference posted ion X.

The Jammu and Kashmir government on Wednesday announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each to the next of kin of those who lost their lives in a bus accident in Doda district, officials said.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has approved an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each for the next of kin, a Raj Bhavan spokesperson said.

He has also approved an amount of Rs 1 lakh for those injured and assured all possible assistance to the affected families, he added.

Biggest accident in Doda in the last few years

This is probably the biggest accident in Doda district in the last few years.

On July 1, 2019, 35 people were killed and 17 injured when an overloaded mini-bus veered off the road and fell into a gorge in Kishtwar’s Sirgwari area.

On October 6, 2018, 21 people were killed and 15 injured when an overcrowded mini-bus fell into a 200-foot gorge after its driver lost control over the vehicle on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, near Kela Morh, in Ramban district.

On September 14, 2022, 11 people, including four women, died and 29 were injured when an overcrowded mini-bus plunged into a gorge in Poonch district.

On September 14, 2018, 17 passengers were killed and 16 injured when a mini-bus skidded off the road and plunged into a gorge in the Dandaran area of Kishtwar district.

On May 30, 2023, 10 Vaishno Devi pilgrims, most of them from Bihar, were killed and 57 injured as their bus skidded off the road and rammed into the railing of a bridge, before falling off it at Jajjarkotli in Jammu district.

On May 24 this year, seven people were killed and three injured after a cruiser vehicle skidded off the road and fell into a gorge at the Dangduru dam site in the Dachan area of Kishwar.

Eight people were killed and three seriously injured when their car skidded off the road and plunged into a 300-foot gorge in Kishtwar on August 30.

On June 27, five people were killed and 12 injured when their vehicle fell into a gorge on the Bhadarwah-Pathankot road in Doda.

Four people, including women, were killed and five injured after a car fell into a roadside gorge at Thanamandi in Rajouri district.

Six people were killed in road accidents in Doda on October 8 and October 20.
