Khammam: A 12-hour nature walk in Kanakagiri Reserve Forest in Tallada, Satthupalli division, Khammam district, revealed an impressive diversity of flora and fauna — a first of its kind in the state. Twelve participants traversed a 4-km stretch of forest, documenting 65 bird species, five mammal species, and five fish species. The exploration was a collaborative effort by conservation enthusiasts including Pradeep Praj (Wild Telangana), Naveen Bala, Sujeet (Meraki Organisation), Harikrishna (VWOLFS foundation), and J. Ramesh, among others. Their joint efforts underscored the critical need to preserve and protect the unique ecosystem of Kanakagiri Reserve Forest.District forest officer Sidharth Vikram Singh highlighted the discovery of the Blue-eared Kingfisher, marking the first documented record of the species in Telangana. “This sighting underscores the ecological significance of Kanakagiri Reserve Forest,” he said. Other notable bird sightings included the Black-winged Pike, Rufous Woodpecker, White-rumped Munia, Blue-throated Blue Fly-catcher, and Black-rumped Shama. Observations of mammals, such as the Malabar Giant Squirrel, further demonstrated the region’s rich biodiversity.The nature walk not only provided valuable wildlife data but also showcased the forest’s breathtaking landscapes, positioning Kanakagiri as a potential hotspot for bird watchers and nature enthusiasts. Officials stressed that further studies and conservation efforts are vital to safeguard its diverse wildlife and habitats.
