KARIMNAGAR: Union minister of state for home affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar accused the Congress of repeatedly disrespecting Dr B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution. He made the remarks during Ambedkar Jayanti celebrations at Ambedkar Stadium in Karimnagar on Sunday.Sanjay Kumar alleged that the Congress not only opposed Ambedkar during his lifetime but also dishonoured him after his death. He claimed the party had prevented Ambedkar’s last rites from being conducted in Delhi and instead shifted them to Mumbai. Further, he said the Congress government had sent a Bill to Ambedkar’s wife demanding payment for the flight used to transport his body — a move he termed “disgraceful and inhumane.” As part of the celebrations, Sanjay Kumar led a bike rally organised by BJP workers. The rally, featuring portraits of Ambedkar and saffron flags, passed through key city locations including Kothirampur, Kaman Chowrasta, One Town Police Station, and Court Chowrasta. The event concluded with BJP leaders washing Ambedkar’s statue with fresh water and raising slogans like “Jai Bhim” and “Jai BJP.” Addressing the media, Sanjay Kumar said Ambedkar’s life and legacy should be taught to future generations to eliminate social ignorance. He described Ambedkar as a revolutionary who overcame poverty and social discrimination to become a global intellectual and a cornerstone of Indian democracy. Praising the BJP government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said significant steps had been taken to honour Ambedkar’s legacy, including the establishment of five memorials, release of commemorative stamps and coins, and installation of Ambedkar’s portraits in Parliament and the Supreme Court. He also highlighted the elevation of Dalit and tribal leaders — Ram Nath Kovind and Droupadi Murmu — as Presidents under the BJP, and emphasised the increased representation of Dalits, OBCs, and women in the Union Cabinet. Referring to Ambedkar’s resignation as law minister in 1951 over Congress’ opposition to the Hindu Code Bill, Sanjay Kumar alleged that the party had consistently worked against Ambedkar, including defeating him in the 1952 and 1954 elections and failing to duly recognise his contributions. “Congress attempted to erase Ambedkar from history. The BJP is committed to preserving and promoting his legacy,” he asserted.
