Assam CM targets Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi says, “People will teach him lesson for disrespecting freedom fighters.”

Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma continuing his tirade against Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Friday launched a frontal attack, accusing him of defaming and disrespecting the freedom fighters by highlighting the contribution of Muslim freedom fighters in his speech in the parliament.Warning that Mr Gogoi would be taught a lesson by the public for his objectionable statements in the parliament, Mr Sarma regretted Mr Gogoi’s assertion that only one community was involved in India’s fight for independence. He also condemned Mr Gogoi’s demand for Muslims to be allowed to hold Namaz prayers on the streets, describing it as divisive and unacceptable. “People around the world have been expressing their concerns about this comment,” claimed Mr Sarma. The chief minister told reporters that Muslims in Assam offer Namaz peacefully in mosques and Idgahs, without any request for street prayers. Mr Sarma also apologized to the people on behalf of Mr Gogoi, stating, “We are really ashamed that a leader from Assam made such derogatory remarks disrespecting our freedom fighters. We hope that he will be taught a lesson by the people.”During the parliamentary debate on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, Mr Gogoi had criticized the proposed legislation, claiming it would weaken the Constitution and target minority communities. He also highlighted the sacrifices of Muslim freedom fighters in India’s independence movement while targeting the saffron ideologs accusing them of begging for an apology from colonial authorities.Earlier Assam chief minister lauded Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s “powerful” address on the amendment to the Waqf Act in Parliament.
