Nellore: Preparations are in full swing for the annual Brahmotsavams at the historic Sri Kodandarama Swamy temple, a nearly two-and-a-half-century-old shrine in Buchireddypalem, SPSR Nellore district. Known for its striking resemblance to the grand temples of Tamil Nadu, the temple stands as a testament to Chola architecture. The temple features an impressive 100-foot Rajagopuram (temple tower) with a broad 50-foot base, making it the second-largest wide Rajagopuram in Andhra Pradesh. Adjacent to the temple lies a one-hectare temple tank (Koneru), the venue for the spectacular Teppotsavam (Float Festival).Constructed by philanthropist Sri Dodla Rami Reddy, the temple’s foundation was laid in 1764 and consecrated in 1784. His nephew, Dodla Pattabhirama Reddy, later built the magnificent temple chariot (Ratham), which remains a centrepiece of the annual celebrations. The temple complex also includes sub-shrines dedicated to Chaturbuja Lakshmi Ammavaru, Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy, Sri Andal Ammavaru, and Sri Prasanna Anjaneya Swamy. This year, the Brahmotsavams will commence on April 6, coinciding with Sri Rama Navami, and will continue for ten days. Key highlights include the celestial wedding of the presiding deity (Sri Vari Kalyanam) on April 11, Hanumantha Seva on April 9, and the grand Garuda Seva on April 10. The Chariot (Ratham) festival, scheduled for April 12, is a major attraction and draws tens of thousands of devotees who come to pull the temple chariot in a spectacular display of devotion. The temple is currently managed by members of the extended Dodla, Bezawada, and Ponnaluru families, with Dodla Muralikrishna Reddy serving as the Founder Trustee and Executive Authority, overseeing its day-to-day operations.
