Army officer killed in ongoing Doda encounter



SRINAGAR: An army officer was killed in an ongoing encounter with militants in Akar forest area of mountainous Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir.A Security official reported heavy gunfire between militants and security forces in the region.In the firefight, an army officer identified as Captain Deepak sustained critical injuries. He was evacuated to a nearby military hospital, where he succumbed to injuries.The clash began yesterday evening when army personnel, conducting a search operation, detected a group of militants hiding in the forest.After the initial firefight, the militants escaped from the area but the security men chased them and the search operation continued throughout the night.“The firefight again resumed between the militants and security forces in the early hours today,” a security official said. “During the search operation, security forces recovered a US-made M-4 carbine rifle and three backpacks from the Shivgarh-Assar belt,” defence sources said.They said blood stains were also spotted in the area and it is being suspected that the militants may have been injured in the gunfight and the militants must have taken the injured along and in a hurry left behind a rifle and some other items.Militants have frequently targeted security forces and engaged in encounters in Doda district. Since June, there has been a noticeable increase in militant violence and attacks in the Jammu region.
