Apple Partners With Alibaba To Roll Out AI Features For iPhones in China: Report

Tech giant Apple is partnering with Alibaba to roll out artificial intelligence features in China.According to a report by The Information, the tech giant initially selected Baidu as its main partner, but the Chinese tech giant’s progress in developing models for Apple Intelligence fell short of its standards.Apple also explored other options including TikTok-parent ByteDance, DeepSeek, and Tencent. Apple is said to have passed on DeepSeek as it lacked the manpower and experience to support a larger customer base, the report said.Apple and Alibaba have submitted the Chinese AI features for approval by China’s cyberspace regulator, the report further said.Earlier, Tim Cook told CNBC that the company is looking for a local partner in China, licensed by the country to offer AI, like OpenAI in the US.“There are a number of Chinese companies that do have licenses to operate locally. What we have to do is choose one and work with them on the integration, just like OpenAI,” Cook said.Apple saw a 11% sales decline in China, and CEO Tim Cook said the reason behind the decline is the lack of Apple Intelligence. Apple’s AI was launched in October 2022, but it has yet to debut in China.For Apple Intelligence’s US launch, Apple partnered with OpenAI, and the deal adds ChatGPT to digital assistant Siri.
