The Musi River, which was once the lifeline of Hyderabad, has been reduced to an open drain, stated Congress MP Anil Kumar Yadav as he brought attention to its worsening condition at the Rajya Sabha on Friday. He called for action and criticised the central government for failing to support its restoration. As he traced Hyderabad’s roots to the river, Yadav pointed out its vital role in the city’s development. “The very foundation of Hyderabad was built along the banks of the Musi. Even our historic Charminar stands in its vicinity,” he said.He reminded the House that Musi was once a source of drinking water and a means of livelihood for many. Over time, unchecked industrial waste and sewage turned it into a polluted water body. “The entire city’s sewage is dumped into it,” he said, adding, “Villages along its banks are suffering, and people are falling ill. The Musi, which once nurtured life, is now causing disease and distress.”Yadav placed the blame on past governments for their inaction. “Successive governments have failed to act,” he said, adding that past negligence had allowed the river to become what it is today. His strongest criticism was directed at the Centre. He said Telangana’s government, under Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, had repeatedly requested funds for the Musi’s revival under the national river regeneration scheme, but there had been no response.”Our government has time and again requested the Centre to allocate funds for the rejuvenation of the Musi,” he said. “But despite multiple representations, there has been no response.” He accused the Centre of turning a blind eye to Hyderabad’s needs, even as people continued to struggle with the river’s deteriorating condition. “If the Centre does not act now, the damage will be irreversible,” he concluded.
