HYDERABAD: Telangana’s special education system may soon see a major update, with school education secretary Dr Yogita Rana expressing interest in integrating AI-based assistive technology and adaptive teaching methods into the state’s schools for the visually impaired.During her visit to the National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Visual Disabilities (NIEPVD) in Dehradun on February 18 and 19, Dr Rana explored the institute’s specialised educational framework. She was particularly keen on the model school’s approach to computer education, science labs, barrier-free infrastructure, and innovative teaching materials designed for visually impaired students.Accompanied by joint director Venkata Narsamma, Darulshifa School for the Blind Principal Mandadi Venkat Reddy, and B-Block School for the Blind senior teacher Suparna, Dr Rana toured key NIEPVD departments, including the Braille Press, e-library, Low Vision Unit, and training centre for the adult blind.Welcomed by NIEPVD in-charge director Amit Sharma, along with faculty and students, the Telangana delegation engaged in discussions on enhancing special schools and making education more accessible.The exchange focused on how technology-driven learning, which are already in place at NIEPVD that could be implemented in Telangana’s institutions.This visit is expected to contribute significantly to enhancing educational policies, infrastructure, and learning methodologies for visually impaired students in Telangana.
