NEW DELHI: Residents of Delhi NCR will be issued an advisory to stay at home and only step out for essential services for three days in a row as Delhi gears up for G20 Summit on September 9th and 10th.
A source said that the Delhi government is being urged to declare a holiday for schools, colleges and offices on September 8. On the two days of the Summit which is scheduled on September 9 and 10, the government is expected to restrict the public’s movement.
Thousands are expected to reach Delhi on the evening of September 8 and return to their respective countries on the evening of September 10th or 11th morning.
Around 28 premier hotels in and around Delhi NCR have been booked for the delegates including those from invitee countries.
With big leaders like US President Biden, Chinese Premier Xi Jinping, British PM Rishi Sunak, and French President Emmanuel Macron, amongst a host of others, who are expected to attend this Summit in person, these steps would ensure that movements within the city are seamless and uninterrupted.
“The best hotels have been identified and earmarked, especially for the guests and their teams. The member countries had a lot of reservations about staying in proximity to the Chinese and Russian delegations. So arrangements have been made for friendly countries to stay in the same property. For instance, Chinese and Brazilian delegations are likely to be staying in proximity,’’ the source added.
The entourage of some countries is expected to be big in size, especially from the US which is expected to include over 500 people. A number of invitees from China and Japan are also expected to come. Saudi Arabia, a guest country, has reportedly booked an entire hotel as they too will have a large entourage.
Meanwhile, the official venue of the Summit at Pragati Maidan (International Exhibition cum Convention Centre) will have delegation rooms for delegates which will include a rest area for the delegate and facilities for live screenings of the meetings. Bilateral meeting rooms have also been set up.
