Kamal Haasan’s much-anticipated film Thug Life has reportedly fetched a massive deal in the Telugu states. According to a leading distributor, “The Telugu dubbing rights have been sold for ₹25 crore — the highest for a Kamal Haasan film in recent times.” He added that the hefty price tag is largely due to the powerful combination of Kamal Haasan and director Mani Ratnam, whose earlier collaboration Nayakudu (the Telugu version of Nayakan) was both a critical and commercial success in the 1980s.With stars like Silambarasan (STR) and Trisha playing pivotal roles, and Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman handling the music, the action-adventure has generated strong global buzz. The film is slated for release in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana on June 5, and expectations for a grand opening are high.“It’s a star-studded commercial entertainer centered on Kamal Haasan and STR. Telugu producer Sudhakar Reddy, who acquired the rights, is banking on strong box office returns,” the distributor said.Reflecting on his decades-long journey with Mani Ratnam, Kamal recalled, at a press meet in Chennai, There was a time we used to sit on a parked scooter on Eldams Road in Alwarpet, dreaming of making films. Nothing’s changed. We always dreamed big, but were limited by the market and budget. The reason we didn’t collaborate again after Nayakan was our own doing. But we’re back now — because of you, the audience.”
