For Nushrratt Bharuccha, returning to her character Sakshi in Chhorii 2 was an emotional experience. Portraying the tensions of protecting her on-screen daughter wasn’t easy, but it was a transformative experience which impacted her in real life. Here she is, talking about her career so far, and the film which premiered on Amazon Prime to a good response:What’s Chhorii 2 all about? The sequel to Chhorii is so organic and so rooted. The first part talked of female foeticide, and in the second part, I save the girl child from being sacrificed and protect her, hoping that her life and mine will be great, but then another social evil catches us.Tell us a bit more on that? It’s a progression from Chhorii 1 to Chhorii 2. When my child is six or seven years old, she is threatened by the evil practice of child marriage. I get goosebumps just talking about it, because this is how it is in the time we live in.We talked about the topic through horror. It’s a very cool and very impactful storytelling tool to drive this concept home. There is no better way to spotlight this topic so that you cringe, and wonder ‘What’s happening? How is this happening?’What is your opinion about the atrocities committed against women even in today’s times? You know, that’s another discussion altogether. But it doesn’t end. Something or the other is constantly happening to women in our society, in our world, not just in any one country. Globally, atrocities on women are higher. The crimes against women are higher. For me, the whole concept of Chhorii is a much larger conversation than just this film. And I’m glad that people are watching and liking the film. How do you look at your career graph after Chhorii 2?I don’t evaluate the past. I guess I haven’t reached that stage where I feel I should reflect upon my work or ponder about how things happened. You are so occupied doing your job that you don’t think about past and future, you are just in the present giving your best. You’re just putting one step forward. I think that’s where I am in life. But I can tell you that I feel very blessed, humbled and grateful that I had the option to do the films that I have done. That’s enriched me as a person and an actor also. You have done commercial films like Sonu Ki Tittu and Dream Girl and now Chhorii. Which genre do you prefer?I like all genres. I will never pick a genre unless I like the script and the role. Mujhe karne ko maza aata hai. I really enjoyed my Sonu Ki Tittu Ki Sweetie dancing on high heels. I enjoyed doing Chhori. I am dono type ki ladki, in real life also. So maybe that’s the reason why I do these different types of films. Are you choosy? If something doesn’t sit well with me, then I can let it go, even if it’s a big production or set up.Was there any film you didn’t like working on?I signed up for a film, and shot it, and it did well also, but working on that set was very difficult as I couldn’t gel with their work ethos, the way things were going was just not my taste.I didn’t get any creative satisfaction there. I wasn’t enjoying it. I was trying to do the best I could while wanting to just finish the film, because I had committed to it, and I’m somebody who cannot back out of a commitment. But I learnt my lesson. I will now be able to say ‘guys, if I’m not going to have fun with it, I don’t want to do it. My happiness, my passion, are very important to me. If you’re going to make me sad, or I’m going to be sad, then there’s no point in it, either for you, or for me. It’s better you cast someone else.
