Hyderabad:The Hyderabad cybercrime police apprehended an electrician of Noida in Uttar Pradesh. 22-year-old Akash Varma, for his role in 30 cyber crimes nationwide, including four in Telangana. Police said Varma supplied bank accounts to the scamsters.Police cracked the case while investigating a complained by a 36-year-old city-based victim who had lost `1.47 crore to scamsters. The victim had been added to a WhatsApp group, where he was approached by three members named Sanjay, Abacus and Amy.Abacus, introduced as the guide, encouraged the victim to download specific applications and start investing.Initially, the victim was advised to invest small amounts, which he was persuaded to gradually increase. Virtual profits were displayed, leading the victim to believe in the authenticity of the scheme. The victim then joined another group, where the investment amounts rose even further.Soon after, the trio began demanding various fees from the victim to make withdrawals. When the victim questioned the payments and attempted to withdraw his funds, his calls went unanswered.Police found that Varma had been procuring bank accounts from various individuals by offering commissions and supplying them to the ringleaders, who used the accounts to facilitate transactions with the victim.Police officials cautioned the public that fraudsters often use social media platforms to lure unsuspecting individuals into such scams, starting with small investments and escalating them until victims are blocked once a large sum has been invested.
