Visakhapatnam: Andhra Pradesh would experience above-normal cumulative rainfall this monsoon, the India Meteorological Department forecast on Tuesday. This is for the second consecutive year when IMD forecast above normal rainfall in its first long range forecast for the southwest monsoon season. IMD forecast that India is likely to see above-normal rainfall in the four-month southwest monsoon season (June to Sept- 2025) with cumulative rainfall of 105 per cent of the long-period average of 87cm. The weather agency ruled out the possibility of El Nino conditions during the entire season. Andhra Pradesh had received 21 per cent of excess rainfall during the south west monsoon (June 1 to 30) in 2024. The state received a cumulative rainfall of 629.2mm rainfall against the normal of 521.6mm. In 2023, AP had recorded a total of 454.6mm rainfall during monsoon which is 13 per cent deficient than the normal. In 2022, the state had recorded a total of 575.5mm rainfall (over 10 per cent more than the normal of 521.6mm). Scientist at IMD-Amaravati, S Karuna Sagar, said Andhra Pradesh can expect good rainfall during the southwest monsoon season this year. North coastal Andhra Pradesh would in particular experience excess rainfall during the monsoon. The exact date of the onset of the southwest monsoon in the state is not known. The arrival of SW monsoon in the state is dependent on its onset and advancement from Kerala. The southwest monsoon usually arrives in AP in the first week of June. Last year, it arrived on June 1, four days in advance.
