GUWAHATI: Normalcy prevailed in Manipur’s Churachandpur district on Tuesday, a day after clashes broke out between Hmar and Zomi tribals in connection with the assault on a tribal leader.The Hmar Inpui and the Zomi Council agreed to lift the shutdown and all activities which disrupt normal life in the district with immediate effect. It was also agreed to work together for the peace and security of the people in the days to come.The decisions were made at a joint meeting held late Monday night. It was convened by the district administration in the wake of clashes which took place in the Churachandpur town following the assault on Richard Hmar, the general secretary of Hmar Inpui and a member of Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum.He was caught by a group of men on his way home, blind-folded and beaten up even after he had revealed his identity. The incident occurred on Sunday night inside the campus of VK Montessori School, Zenhang in the district.“The Hmar Inpui and the Zomi Council also called upon the public to calm down and desist from disrupting normal life in the town. The issue of physical violence in question is being settled as per local customary law and practices,” the joint statement read.
