Geeta admires mom’s courage

Hyderabad: Senior Congress leader and former minister J. Geeta Reddy stated that she drew inspiration from her mother, Eashwari Bai, in every aspect of her life. Speaking at an event organised by the state government to mark the 34th death anniversary of Eashwari Bai at Ravindra Bharathi on Monday, Geeta Reddy expressed admiration for her mother’s courage, self-confidence, and success despite the absence of political and financial backing.Paying rich tributes to her mother, Dr Geeta Reddy recalled Eashwari Bai’s contributions, her adherence to the Ambedkarite ideology, and her relentless advocacy for marginalised communities.“I am fortunate to be born to a woman like her. She never let caste hinder her work and always dedicated herself to the welfare of the people. At a time when women hesitated to enter politics, she courageously contested against the government and won her first election in 1951. She personally engaged with the public, identified their problems, and presented well-researched discussions in the Legislative Assembly,” Dr Geeta Reddy said. The Eashwari Bai Memorial Award for 2025 was presented to Prof. Lawrence Simon, director of the Centre of Global Development and Sustainability and Joint Editor-in-Chief of CASTE. Originally from Ukraine, Dr Simon is now settled in the US.The programme also included discussions on issues concerning scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, and other societal matters. The event saw the participation of students and professors from the Eashwari Bai Memorial College of Nursing.Dr Geeta Reddy also felicitated Mamidi Hari Krishna, director of the department of language and culture, Alekhya Punjala, chairperson of Telangana Sangeeta Nataka Akademi, Dr G.V.
