Based on the life of Maratha King Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj – a great warrior who was prodigiously courageous but this unsung hero aka warrior’s love for his Country and especially love for every Maratha is not known to the world. It’s an adaptation of Marathi novel Chhava. The film opens with the Mughal Empire celebrating. No sooner, Aurangzeb receives the news that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, their most influential enemy is no more. But Their happiness is short-lived with the arrival of Chhava- Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj -son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj who proves to be a larger danger to the Mughal empire. Aurangzeb starts finding ways to defeat Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. He feels so envious of this young lad that in the last scene he is seen wishing, if he could have given birth to such a strong and courageous son himself. Slowly and gradually the drama of deceit, revenge and emotional drama keeps unfolding.Direction: The larger-than-life intriguing storyline that depicts the strength, determination and devotion filled in every vein of this courageous warrior whose love for every Maratha individual portrayed by the director instils a typical appreciation for Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. Every scene has been grippingly directed helping every actor to excel in their performances.Performances: Without an iota of doubt every actor has played their part well.Vicky Kaushal as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj has excelled in every scene. The last 25 minutes are heavy action filled with blood-shed, merciless killings, though highly gore sequences that brings in loads of heartfelt emotions. Finally, in the end scene Vicky being held captive yet refusing to capitulate to the torture extended by Aurangzeb raises the emotional temperature of everyone present in the hall sitting at the edge of their seat. Vicky will surly mesmerise the audiences sustaining the ruthless torture that he meets. Yet refuses to budge standing against it as strong as a pillar. Vicky’s birth as a warrior showing him robust right from his entry scene leaves a perpetual imprint until the last scene with his captivating performance throughout the film is never seen before like.Akshaye Khanna who plays the pivotal role of the Mughal Shahenshah Aurangzeb is left impressed with Chhava’s tolerance power, he feels helpless watching the warrior. Needless to state, Akshay Khanna steals the show in every scene that he appears in. He leaves an everlasting impression in the minds of one and all. His controlled performance with a simple face and a stoned heart makes him the actor he is.Kudos to the man for proving his worth with every film in his career.Rashmika Mandanna -As Maharani Yesubai, she befits the role. Her loving expressions as a wife standing by the side of her husband combined with the wisdom of a queen has been depicted exuberantly in her performances. She feels the pain and anguish of her husband from within. She exudes sincere love for her husband and family through her able performance. She proves to be a crucial pillar to the narration. Supporting Cast: Vineet Kumar Singh delivers an excellent performance and nails it while being dragged into the journey of death in the concluding scene, moving forward with his poetic impression it’s a hair-raising performance. Ashutosh Rana and Divya Dutta have proficiently performed their parts. Diana Penty didn’t have much to do, just added some spice while mouthing a few dialogues, ordering some gruesome torturous acts to be implemented on to Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.Cinematography: Saurabh Goswami’s spectacular camera work has captured the warring scenes very effectively. Capturing the warfare and the warriors in a huge team, in an embossed like sequence and the hand-to-hand raw combat is indeed tough to capture so very clearly. Too much gore action and bloodshed. Yet bringing out the ruthless thought process of the Moghuls of that era wonderfully on the big screen makes it surreal.Tight crisp -Screenplay, fast paced editing and meaningful dialogues add up to the storyline.Music is more than just a soundtrack, it’s an important part of the story telling. The powerful battle anthems ignite emotions in you.What went missing:A little scrolling, putting up detailed versions happening in the given locations and between the two warring parties below every scene, would make every lay man and the young generation understand the historical action drama in a much better way. Gen zee, needs to know more about Indian history and the courage of many unsung heroes of our Country. This will ignite love and respect and a patriotic feeling in the younger generation towards their Country.Final Verdict: All in all, the historical, action-drama film,” Chhavaa” should be watched by every Indian citizen nationally and globally as well.
