76 Years’ Old Escapes Cyber Criminals’ Tentacles, Saves Rs 1.20 Crore

Kakinada: Awareness programmes on cybercrimes conducted by police officials made senior citizen M. Viswanatham (76) of Pratapnagar in Kakinada wary. He retained Rs 1.20 crore in his bank, instead of transferring the amount to fraudsters.Three days ago, Viswanatham, a retired government employee, received a video call from unknown persons, saying he is being cyber arrested and must not move out of his house, unless he makes the payment because of which he is being arrested. Viswanatham panicked and almost made up his mind to transfer the amount from his bank account. But he regained his composure when he recollected the campaign of police asking people to be vigilant of cyber frauds and fake cyber arrests. The retired government employee immediately approached the Two Town police and narrated the incident. Circle inspector Appala Naidu appreciated Viswanatham for approaching the police. Kakinada district superintendent of police G. Bindu Madhav told Deccan Chronicle that cybercrimes have become a major problem due to online-based marketing. He advised people who transfer the amount to approach police within minutes or dial 1930 to freeze their account, so that their amount is not transferred to the culprits. The SP appreciated the Viswanatham for not transferring his money and also immediately approaching police.
