Kolkata: West Bengal has received investment proposals worth Rs 4.40 lakh crores during the eighth edition of Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS). Chief minister Mamata Banerjee made the announcement in front of the industrialists at the end of the two-day event on Thursday. She said, “This time we have received investment proposals for Rs 4,40,595 lakh crore during the two-day event. This will create thousands of job opportunities in our state. The overwhelming response to BGBS 2025 reflects Bengal’s growing economic potential.” In 2023, the state received investment proposals worth over Rs 3.76 lakh crores. The CM claimed that the state remains a ‘prime destination’ for investors as 212 memoranda of understanding and letters of intent were signed across various sectors of industries. She also underlined her government’s development efforts since coming to power. Ms Banerjee noted that the initiatives have lifted 1.72 crore people above the poverty line in the state. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari took potshots at her. He wrote on X-handle, “CM Mamata Banerjee has reduced the stature of BGBS to a circus, where people come for entertainment. The only precondition is that the attendees can’t laugh on stage or within the venue. The biggest LOL moment is when Mamata Banerjee announces the amount of Investment Proposals received in the current year. Hold your breath. This year the amount is Rs. 4,40,595 Crores !!! (Four lakh Forty thousand Five hundred Ninety five Crores).” He added, “So the total amount of Investment Proposals received in all the 8 editions of BGBS events over the years is Rs. 23,91,865 Crores !!!. (Twenty three lakh Ninety one thousand Eight hundred Sixty five Crores). Only !!! Mamata Banerjee says that the majority of the amount has already been invested. Even a child knows that it’s the biggest lie of the world.”
