NAAC Officials Demanded Bribes for A++ Rating: CBI

Hyderabad: The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) officials demanded a total Rs 1.80 crore bribe for giving a favourable inspection report from the Koneru Lakshmaiah Educational Foundation (KLEF) management.The Koneru Lakshmaiah Education Foundation (KLEF) Vice-Chancellor G P Saradhi Varma booked flight tickets for Dr L Manjunatha Rao, Ex Deputy Advisor, NAAC and M Hanumathappa, professor and Director (IQAC-NAAC), department of Computer Sciences and Applications Bangalore University to visit Vijayawada where the KLEF VC GP Saradhi and its president Koneru Satyanarayana had delivered a bribe of Rs 10 lakh to M Hanumanthappa and L Manjunatha Rao for arranging favourable NAAC inspection. A day after the CBI, Delhi officials, registered criminal cases against 15 persons and arrested ten persons including KLEF president and VC including NAAC officials, the agency intensified the probe into the case. According to sources, the KLEF management also arranged accommodation for the accused officers at the Novotel Hotel, Vijayawada on January 22. On January 18 and 19, M Hanumanthappa and L Manjunatha Rao visited Vijayawada and met Koneru Satyanarayana and VC G P Saradhi Varma with regard to NAAC inspection. “On January 19, Koneru Satyanarayana and VC G P Saradhi Varma had delivered a bribe of Rs 10 lakh to Hanumanthappa and L Manjunatha Rao for arranging a fourable NAAC inspection team. Out of which Rs 5 lakh was meant to be delivered to M S Shyamsundar, Advisor, NAAC, Bangalore and the remaining Rs 5 lakh to M Hanumanthappa and L Manjunatha Rao. On January 22, D Gopal, one of the NAAC Inspection team members contacted G P Saradhi Varma and disclosed the names of seven members of NAAC Inspection team and about their stay at Novotel Hotel, Vijayawada. Gopal also assured G P Saradhi Varma that he spoke to Samarendra Nath Saha, Chairman and Rajeev Sijariya, member Coordinator which will be preparing the final report of the inspection,” the CBI officials said. Interestingly, Gopal also asked KLEF VC G P Saradhi Varma to bear the expenses of his wife’s visit to Vijayawada. and to stay in a star hotel. On January 25, Koneru Raja Hareen, Vice President of KLEF and A Ramakrishna, Director, KL University, Hyderabad as deputed by the president of KLEF met Rajeev Sijariya and others in Delhi and negotiated a bribe amount for favourable inspection report. The NAAC officials demanded Rs 1.80 crore in total for managing the whole inspection team but of which Rs 1.30 crore was for himself as he (Rajeev Sijariya) would be the person preparing the inspection report. However, Koneru Raja Hareen and Ramakrishna started bargaining with the NAAC officials to reduce the bribe amount.
