Dornakal turns ideal site to set up dry port in Telangana

Warangal (Mahbubabad): Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s recent announcement in Davos about establishing a dry port in Telangana has stirred discussions on its potential location in the erstwhile Warangal district. All signs point to Dornakal Railway Junction in Mahbubabad district, given its excellent road-rail links and proximity to Machilipatnam Port, just 213 km away.Dornakal’s rail connectivity already plays a pivotal role in linking North and South Telangana. Ongoing upgrades, including a third line in the Bhadrachalam Road–Madhira–Dornakal sections, and a development budget of roughly Rs 69 crore, further enhance its appeal. The region is well-connected to four major national highways and has robust water resources through local irrigation projects like Munneru, Sitaram, and SRSP canals.Authorities note that 400 acres of government land in nearby areas (Gunturathimadugu, Balapalem, and Ammapalem) are readily available for the proposed dry port. Government Chief Whip and Dornakal MLA Dr J. Ramchander Naik confirmed submitting a proposal to the Chief Minister, emphasising year-round employment opportunities for local youth.Mahbubabad MP Porika Balram Naik pledged to raise the issue in Parliament, citing Dornakal’s ideal infrastructure for a dry port in a tribal district. South Central Railway CPRO A. Sridhar highlighted existing and planned rail projects around Dornakal, including a Rs 100-crore doubling project to Bhadrachalam and a new line from Junagarh to Pandurangapuram. These initiatives will connect the region with major industrial belts in Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Kolkata, as well as ports in Andhra Pradesh, potentially transforming Dornakal into a key logistics and warehousing hub for Telangana.
