Vijayawada: An inscription in Telugu language, engraved on a rock, has been found below the tank at Peddamandyam village of Annamayya district in Andhra Pradesh. The inscription was done with the characters of 16th Century CE, based on an order issued in the cyclic year of Tarana, Ashada. It recorded that an agreement has been made between the Reddis and Karanams of the ‘Pedamandeyam’ village, under which the villagers of Devarakonda and Pavabatulapalli could utilise water from the tank of Pedamandeyam for agricultural purposes. It stated that the “villagers have agreed to pay a portion of paddy” for each ‘kamatamu’ (cultivable land under the cultivation of a cultivator/family) for maintenance of the tank. This was the period when Mahanayankacharya Kokam Nayani was administering the region.Notably, the Archaeological Survey of India (Epigraphy branch) was alerted about the presence of the inscription in the tank by readymade garments shop owner Syed Abd Khadar hailing from the village.
