Hyderabad: Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu on Monday said that the production from Naini coal mine would commence from March 2025. “As Naini being a captive block, the coal produced from its coal mine is to be supplied to the end use plant – 2X600 MW Singareni Thermal Power Plant (STPP) at Jaipur in Mancherial district. This power plant is about 1000 kms, from Naini Mine involving lot of difficulties in logistics, which prompted SCCL to envisage setting up a 2X800 MW TPP in Odisha in the vicinity of Naini Coal Mine as a pit head power plant, so that the coal produced from this mine is gainfully utilized, ensuring minimum generation cost,” he explained. As per the 20th EPS (Electric Power Survey) report, there is a huge demand for thermal power for the next three decades. Also, a letter dated May 1, 2024, from the Secretary, Ministry of Coal informed the Ministry of Power that there is a pressing need to establish new thermal power plants that are close to the mines to ensure reduced transportation cost, ensuring steady and reliable fuel supply, reduced environmental impact. In view of this, after deliberations between officials of Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), Odisha government and IDCO, a team of SCCL and IDCO officials visited two sites – Jarpada, Tukuda and Handappa, Baninali on November 6, 2024, as a part of land identification process for the prospective SCCL thermal power plant. This coveted project of SCCL, nevertheless, will be an extremely advantageous endeavour, a win-win opportunity for both the States, as it will create employment opportunities as well as providing positive infrastructural development. On behalf of Telangana government, Bhatti, in a letter addressed to Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Mahji, requested to intervene in the matter and advise the concerned to allot suitable land for enabling SCCL to establish 2X800 MW thermal power project, in the vicinity of Naini coal mine.
