Delay in NEET PG counselling worries students in Telangana

Hyderabad: Telangana NEET PG 2024-qualified students are in turmoil as the state counselling process for postgraduate medical seats has yet to begin, while two rounds of All India Quota (AIQ) counselling have already concluded, with the third round set to commence on December 27.Students are urging the authorities to start state-level counselling before the third AIQ round begins, fearing they might lose out on seats in both.“This is a do-or-die situation for students,” said Dr Tarun Kumar, a NEET PG aspirant. “Typically, both AIQ and state counselling occur simultaneously. However, due to locality-related issues, the state counselling hasn’t started this year. Telangana students don’t even know their standing within the state as the merit list hasn’t been released.:“This leaves some students stuck with AIQ seats from round 2, with the resignation deadline on December 26. The state counselling process must begin immediately so students can make informed decisions about their preferences,” Dr Kumar explained. Many students with AIQ seats (covering 50 per cent of the total seats) are resigning in hopes of securing better options in state counselling. However, this uncertainty has left students distressed. Not all students secure seats through AIQ, and even those who do often end up with branches or colleges far from their preferences.“It’s crucial for students to have access to the state merit list to make these critical decisions,” added Dr Kumar. Students expressed frustration over compromising on their preferred branches or being forced to move far from their hometowns due to the delayed state counselling. “This situation could have been avoided if the state merit list had been released on time,” lamented one student. “It’s heartbreaking for students who have spent one, two, or even three years preparing for NEET PG 2024, hoping it would change their lives,” said another student. “We’ve endured endless stress over exam postponements and prepone rumors, and now we’re stuck in limbo over the counselling process. It’s incredibly disheartening.” Students highlighted that starting state counselling after AIQ round 3 would result in grave injustice to Telangana aspirants. “All of us have already paid `25,000 as security deposit for AIQ round 2 counselling. We will have to pay again for round 3 if we resign from our seats here. For state counselling, we have already paid `5,000 at the time of registration,” Dr Kumar said. The students are demanding immediate action from Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS) and the Telangana government to expedite the process. “We urge KNRUHS to release the state merit list and conduct the first round of state counselling without further delay. Additionally, we request the Medical Council Commission to extend the resignation deadline for AIQ round 2 and postpone AIQ round 3 to ensure fairness,” said Dr Kumar. Highlighting the urgency of the matter, NEET PG aspirant Vamsi MS said, “The academic year for 2024-25 has already begun in other states as of December 20. Telangana must act quickly to avoid jeopardising the futures of 8,000 students in the state.”
