Sanjay Malhotra was appointed as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India on Monday, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet in a statement informed. Malhotra a 1990 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the Rajasthan cadre, will assume office from December 11, for the next three years, the RBI said in a statement.

Revenue Secretary Malhotra will replace Shaktikanta Das, whose tenure comes to an end on Tuesday, December 10. The 56-year-old will be the 26th RBI Governor. He holds an engineering graduate in computer science from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, and has a Master’s in Public Policy from Princeton University.

In a career spanning over 33 years, Malhotra has worked in multifarious sectors, including power, finance and taxation, information technology, and mines, among others. At present, he is the Revenue Secretary in the Finance Ministry.

In his previous assignment, he held the post of Secretary in the Department of Financial Services under the Ministry of Finance. He has extensive experience in finance and taxation at the state as well as the central government levels.
As a part of his present assignment, he plays an instrumental role in tax policy formulation in respect of direct and indirect taxes.

A day before his appointment, the outgoing Reserve Bank Governor Shaktikanta Das met Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The career bureaucrat-turned-central banker, Das, was appointed the 25th RBI Governor on December 12, 2018, after the abrupt exit of Urjit Patel.

With the three-year-extension granted to Das, he is already one of the longest serving RBI governors in its 90-year history.

Over the past six years, Das has dealt with a slew of challenges, including Covid-19 and wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.

He has been awarded the central banker of the year for two successive terms at global forums for his deft navigation of the fastest growing major economy in the world.
