Telangana High Court imposes hefty fine on former BRS MLA for concealing German citizenship

Hyderabad: Justice B. Vijaysen Reddy of the Telangana High Court imposed a significant fine of Rs 30 lakhs on Dr Chennamaneni Ramesh, a former MLA from the BRS party who represented the Vemulawada Assembly constituency. The court found that Ramesh had concealed his German citizenship. The court ordered Ramesh to pay Rs. 25 lakh to Aadi Srinivas, the current MLA of the Vemulawada constituency. Srinivas had filed a petition challenging Ramesh’s Indian citizenship and had also approached the Union home ministry with the same concern. The court deemed the Rs 25 lakh compensation for the legal expenses incurred by Srinivas in pursuing these challenges. The remaining Rs 5 lakh of the fine were directed to be paid to the Telangana State Legal Services Authority. In its judgment, the court highlighted that Ramesh failed to produce any documentation from the German Embassy confirming that he was not a German citizen. Despite holding German citizenship, Ramesh had travelled to Germany multiple times and served as the MLA for the Vemulawada constituency. The court dismissed the writ petition with exemplary costs.
