Kalaburagi: Kalaburagi city police have arrested three individuals in connection with a child kidnapping case and successfully reunited the newborn with its parents.
The child, born to Ramakrishna Sagar and Kasturi of Ravur in Chittapur Taluk, was abducted on Monday afternoon from the Gulbarga Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS). Two of the accused, disguised as hospital staff and wearing aprons, kidnapped the infant. CCTV footage from the hospital captured the duo taking the child, while external cameras showed them leaving in an autorickshaw.
Following the incident, a case was registered at the Brahmpur police station. City Police Commissioner Dr. Sharanappa SD formed four special teams to trace the suspects and recover the child. Acting on credible information, the police located the newborn and apprehended the three accused before they could sell the infant.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Umera (30), Nasari Banu (32), and Fathima (35), all residents of the Jilani Darga area in Kalaburagi.
During interrogation, the accused admitted to kidnapping the child to sell it to a woman for Rs 50,000. They had already received an advance payment of Rs 25,000. According to their statement, the woman, who had been childless for 5-7 years, was facing difficulties with the legal adoption process. She reportedly wanted a male child, but the adoption process favored girl children and involved a waiting period of over a year.
“The accused had attempted to abduct a child on Sunday but failed. They returned on Monday afternoon and succeeded in kidnapping the newborn. We have arrested three accused in connection to this case,” Commissioner Sharanappa told reporters.
Police are verifying the statements of the accused and questioning a few including the woman who was allegedly the intended buyer.
