Hyderabad: Some junior engineers, who were on the field during the construction of Medigadda, Annaram and Sundilla barrages of the Kaleshwaram project, were not aware of the whereabouts of quality control records that were supposed to have been maintained during the construction process.During the first day of resumed public hearings on Monday by Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose’s commission of inquiry into the Kaleshwaram barrages, some officials tried to give evasive replies to his questions on the sequence of events at Medigadda from the time of planning to its functioning. The evasive replies forced Justice Ghose to caution the assistant executive and deputy executive engineers of the irrigation department to respond truthfully to questions. The commission heard during the cross-examinations that the field-level engineers had noted damages beginning to occur, particularly at Medigadda barrage, in 2020, and more such instances were also observed till 2023. The engineers said that they took information of these happenings to the notice of their superior officers. The commission also obtained signatures of some of the officials who were questioned on Monday on various work-related registers. When some of the engineers requested that questions be posed to them in Telugu, the commission expressed surprise and asked them if this difficulty does not become a hindrance to career progress.
