Guwahati: India is likely to evacuate the 43 Myanmar military personnel who sought refuge in Mizoram after heavy gunfight with some armed ethnic groups in the country.
The soldiers came in two batches. Thirty-nine came on Monday evening and three on Tuesday morning. One was reportedly injured. Upon their arrival, Mizoram police took their custody.
Sources said efforts were being made to fly them out of Mizoram. The defence authorities are arranging helicopters to take them to the India-Myanmar border town of Moreh in Manipur. From there, they will travel by road to reach an undisclosed destination in Myanmar.
According to the sources, there is a possibility that one or two helicopters will be used to take the soldiers to Moreh.
A mob, believed to be comprising Chin refugees from Myanmar, staged a protest outside the Zokhawthar police station in Mizoram’s Champhai district, where the junta soldiers were kept, on Monday evening.
A fierce gunbattle erupted at Khawmawi in Myanmar on Sunday evening after the armed groups Kuki Independent Army, Kuki National Army and Chinland Defence Force overran a Myanmar Army camp in a joint attack. The place is close to Zokhawthar.
In the wake of the fighting, over 1,500 Chin refugees, including 16 who were injured, fled to Mizoram. Later, one succumbed to his injuries. He was shot in the eye.
The refugees are now taking shelter in some schools, community halls etc in Champhai. Some went to live in the houses of their relatives inside Mizoram. The administration, NGOs and villagers are helping them with food and clothing. Chins and Mizos are ethnic cousins, belonging to the Zo community.
The trouble in Myanmar began in February 2021 after the military in the country had captured power through a coup. Ever since then, there has been a steady influx of Chin refugees into Myanmar. In the past two and half years, more than 37,000 refugees fled to Mizoram.
