The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) should consider replacing the name ‘India’ with ‘Bharat’ in textbooks and introduce ‘classical History’ instead of ancient History in the curriculum, a high-level committee for social sciences’ chairperson CI Issac said on Wednesday.
The proposal was put forth some months ago and has now been accepted, Issac said.
The Committee chairman CI Issac said the panel also recommends the introduction of the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) in the curriculum for all subjects, ThePrint reported.
Issac said the “unanimous” recommendation of the seven-member committee has found mention in its final position paper on social sciences, which is a key prescriptive document that is supposed to lay down the foundation for the development of new NCERT textbooks on the subject.
The panel chaired by Issac was among the 25 committees formed by the NCERT in December 2021 to prepare position papers on various subjects and themes.
The NCERT panel’s recommendation came against the backdrop of a debate on whether the country will be renamed ‘Bharat’.
