AHMEDABAD: Nine people were killed and ten others injured after a speeding car crashed into a crowd gathered at an accident site on a bridge in Ahmedabad early on Thursday. The person driving the vehicle, Tathya Patel and his father Pagnesh Patel were taken into custody by the police after the accident.
According to the police, the accident occurred about 1 am at the ISKCON bridge on the Sarkhej-Gandhinagar highway in Satellite area when a Jaguar travelling at a high speed smashed into the crowd gathered at the spot in the wake of another accident that took place earlier.
“There was an accident between a Thar jeep and a dumper. Meanwhile, a car approached at a great speed and hit the people who were standing at the spot,” Qureshi Altamas, who was left injured in the accident, was quoted as saying to the local media.
“Some individuals were injured and others died. The impact was so severe that I passed out on the spot. When I regained consciousness, I was in the hospital,” he added. “At around 1 am, a Thar collided with a truck at ISKCON Bridge on SG Highway. Following notification of the collision, local traffic officers and a home guard jawan arrived on the scene to manage traffic and the situation,” Satellite police station inspector K Y Vyas said.
“Several bystanders gathered at the scene out of curiosity to see what had happened. A speeding Jaguar car rammed into the crowd while they were on the bridge, killing five people on the spot while four people died during treatment,” he added. According to DCP Neeta Desai, an FIR has been filed by the police. “It does not appear that the driver was intoxicated. Our examination found that the Jaguar car was travelling at an exceptionally high speed.”
