NEW DELHI: Heatwaves and dust storms are making a comeback to India’s western and eastern states after a long spell of low temperature and pleasant weather conditions. On Friday, temperature for India’s major cities averaged between 42.3 °C and 45 °C. Rajasthan’s Barmer city temperature was recorded as the highest at 45 °C.
India witnessed the coolest April in 13 years. The first cyclone of the season, Mocha, which will further intensify and will bring rainfall over most parts of Tripura and Mizoram. It will impact shipping movement in the southeast Bay of Bengal.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heatwave-like conditions over west Rajasthan, west Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Konkan, Goa and Vidarbha region of Maharashtra over the next two days. The heatwaves would further spread over isolated pockets in eastern states like Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha and coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam. It also forecast dust storms in isolated pockets over Rajasthan, Haryana and west Uttar Pradesh.
The IMD also issued an orange alert for the state of Assam. A few northeast states would have high temperatures, which may increase the chance of heat illness symptoms. It advised vulnerable people like infants, the elderly and people with chronic diseases.
Meanwhile, the IMD has categorised Cyclone Mocha as a ‘very severe cyclonic storm’, which will further intensify tonight over east-central Bay of Bengal. It will have a maximum sustained wind speed of 150-160 kmph to 175 kmph.
