NEW DELHI: Former Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh will join the BJP on Monday.
Captain Amarinder had already met PM Narendra Modi. He also met home minister Amit Shah last week.
BJP President JP Nadda is likely to induct Amarinder into the party on Monday.
Amarinder will also merge his new party, the Punjab Lok Congress, with the BJP.
The Punjab Lok Congress and the BJP had fought the February 2022 Assembly elections together. The Aam Aadmi Party had trumped in that election winning 92 of the 117 seats.
The BJP alliance was drubbed and ended with just two seats. The Punjab Lok Congress drew a blank and Captain Amarinder too lost despite standing from his stronghold of Patiala.
was the first to break the news of Amarinder’s plans to join the BJP in June 30.
Several senior Congress leaders close to the ex-Punjab CM have already joined the BJP following Amarinder’s departure from the Congress in November 2021.
They include ex-Punjab Pradesh Congress President Sunil Jakhar and four top ministers from Captain’s Cabinet – Raj Kumar Verka, a Dalit leader from Majha, Sundar Sham Arora, working president of PPCC, and Balbir Singh Sidhu and Gurpreet Singh Kangar.
We had reported back then said that the main challenge before the BJP was on how to accommodate Amarinder Singh’s wife Preneet Kaur, a former Union minister and sitting Member of Parliament from Patiala.
Preneet Kaur has reportedly decided to hang her boots and hand over the mantle to her daughter Jai Inder Kaur. She wants the BJP to promise the Patiala Lok Sabha ticket to Jai Inder Kaur.
