MUMBAI:  A scuffle broke out between the pro-Shinde and NCP MLAs inside the Maharashtra Vidhan Bhavan on Wednesday following heated exchanges over how the CM had “lured away” the Shiv Sena lawmakers to form a government with BJP support.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde NCP’s Lok Sabha MP Supriya Sule has demanded ‘Z plus’ security to Opposition MLAs, accusing the pro-CM MLAs of threatening the Opposition. “The Centre should seek a report from the state home minister about the law and order situation. Action should be taken by pro-Shinde MLAs who have openly threatened the Opposition legislators,” Sule said. “The behavior of Shinde’s MLAs has brought disrespect to the political culture of Maharashtra,” Sule said.

Earlier on Wednesday, Opposition MLAs shouted slogans such as ‘Panas Khoke, ekdam okay (Rs 50 crore, all is okay)’, an allegation that Shinde MLAs took Rs 50 crore from BJP to topple the Uddhav Thackeray government).

The Opposition MLAs also showed carrots to the ruling party MLAs. Rattled, the Shinde MLAs then allegedly got into a scuffle with Opposition MLAs at the staircases of Vidhan Bhavan. Chief whip of the CM camp told the media that if the Opposition came in their way, then they would show them their place. “We are not afraid of anything,” said Bharat Gogawale.

NCP MLC Amol Mitkari alleged that ruling MLAs hurled abuses at them. “We were surprised that as opposition MLAs, we were only protesting at Vidhan Bhavan. It is the right of the Opposition to protest against the decisions of the ruling party. Some of the Shinde camp MLAs started manhandling us. We have complained to CM Eknath Shinde, asking him to take action against his MLAs,” Mitkari said.
