RANCHI:  The  Jharkhand High Court on Friday expressed its displeasure over the Interlocutory Application (IA) filed by the Jharkhand government with a plea to defer the hearing on PILs seeking probe against Chief Minister Hemant Soren.

The division bench of Chief Justice Dr Ravi Ranjan and Justice SN Prasad asked why the government is running away from the hearing, and wondered if the matter could be argued in the apex court, why it could not be heard in HC.

“Why is the state government adamant on making only a particular advocate appear on behalf of it, given the fact that it has a battery of advocates,” the Court observed. The Jharkhand government citied two reasons for seeking adjournment.

They said that both their advocates Supreme Court Advocate Kapil Sibal and Advocate General Rajeev Ranjan have tested positive for Covid-19.  Also, since the matter is pending in the SC, it should be deferred. The matter will now be heard on June 23 in virtual mode.
