84% stolen phones restored to owners using CEIR portal

Karimnagar:Police in Rajanna Sircilla district on Thursday recovered 100 mobile phones — valued at approximately ₹10 lakh — and returned them to their rightful owners. The successful recovery is part of an ongoing effort that has already identified 1,887 lost or stolen phones, of which 1,587 have been returned, resulting in an impressive recovery rate of 84.1 per cent in the district. The initiative, which employs the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal introduced by the Department of Telecommunications in May 2023, has proven effective in tracing devices even when they are recovered from various regions, including neighbouring states. During a mobile phone recovery event held at the District Police Office, Superintendent of Police Mahesh B. Githe handed over the recovered phones to the victims. He urged the public to immediately report lost or stolen devices via the CEIR portal (https://www.ceir.gov.in) to block the phones and prevent misuse. SP Githe also cautioned citizens about the rising threat of mobile phone thefts, noting that criminals often target phones to access sensitive personal information, including bank account details and passwords. He advised buyers to always request receipts when purchasing second-hand phones and warned that knowingly buying stolen phones could result in criminal charges.
