Alex Ovechkin, captain of the National Hockey League’s Washington Nationals, is considered to be one of the GOATs of ice hockey, but his heart is with his wife, Anastasia Shubskaya, who also goes by the names Nastya and Nastasiya. The couple have been married for years, but Nastya is making headlines once again for her presence at the National’s April 2025 game against the New York Islanders.

Alex & Nastasiya Got Engaged in 2015
Nastasiya recalled her husband’s memorable proposal during a 2020 interview with The Washington Post. She revealed that Alex popped the big question while she was in the shower.
“I was like, ‘What! Do you understand I am just …’ and he didn’t stop, so I was like, ‘Oh, my gosh’ and I got a towel, and I opened the door, and he is on one knee with the flowers and with the ring,” Anastasia told the publication. “At first when I opened the door I thought I would kill him. Can you imagine you were in the shower and then you need to get out … Oh my God. Why you couldn’t just wait? He said: ‘No, no, no. I wanted to right now.’”
Nastasiya & Alex Were Engaged After His Breakup From a Tennis Player
Before falling in love with Nastya, Alex was previously engaged to tennis pro Maria Kirilenko, but they called off their wedding in 2014. That year, Maria reportedly said, “Our relationship is over, but I respect Sasha [Ovechkin] as a person and as an athlete, and I respectfully wish him further sporting success.”
Anastasia Is the Daughter of a Russian Actress
Nastya’s mother is late Russian actress Vera Glagoleva, who died in August 2017 from cancer.
Alex & Nastasiya Have Children
Nastasiya is the mother of two children named Sergei and Ilya, whom she shares with her husband, Alex.
During their past interview with The Washington Post, Alex gushed over fatherhood, saying that he was “kind of waiting for that moment when my kid is going to be around with me in the locker room. The culture that we have here, it is something special, and all the guys love the kids, and it is going to be fun for him as well.”
