18 killed, five injured after blast, blaze at firecracker godown in Gujarat's Banaskantha

AHMEDABAD: persons were killed and five others injured after a blast at a firecracker warehouse led to a blaze and collapse of the building in Gujarat’s Banaskantha district on Tuesday, officials said.Deesa Municipal firefighters and 108 ambulances rushed to the scene immediately after receiving information about the incident.”As many as 18 persons died in the incident, and five others are injured after the slab of the building collapsed following a massive blast,” Superintendent of Police Akshayraj Makwana said.He said the victims were workers from Madhya Pradesh and their family members, and most of them died after the slab collapsed on them. The unit was meant to store firecrackers, and so far no clue has been found that firecrackers were being manufactured, Makwana said.According to preliminary information, it is suspected that a massive explosion occurred in the gunpowder unit of the factory, triggering the fire. The explosion was so powerful that a nearby warehouse collapsed, and debris was scattered up to 200 meters away. The workers were manufacturing firecrackers when the explosion occurred. The blast was so severe that human body parts were thrown far and wide, with remains found even in adjacent fields. There was tremendous chaos at the scene as fire department personnel struggled to control the blaze.
