Visakhapatnam: The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has seized 1,200 kg of single-use plastic in Visakhapatnam since the ban came into effect on 1 January.Additional Commissioner R. Somanarayana stated that before the implementation of the ban, the GVMC had conducted a 45-day awareness campaign to educate the public, business and commercial establishments, small traders, consumers, producers, and suppliers about the harmful effects of single-use plastics and the benefits of using alternatives.Despite the ban, GVMC public health officers, sanitary inspectors, and secretaries have been conducting raids across all zones to enforce it. Stickers saying “Say No to Plastic,” featuring QR codes with details about alternative products, have been pasted on 55,000 trade licences across zonal secretariats for public awareness. Inspection teams have raided business complexes and plastic manufacturers in Autonagar, confiscating banned plastic items. The Additional Commissioner urged citizens to stop using single-use plastics and adopt eco-friendly alternatives to make Visakhapatnam a sustainable and environmentally friendly city.
